Dear AP Psych Students

Image
Dear AP Psych students,      I took AP Psych because of all the amazing recommendations I got from my friends, and now that I have taken it, I realize that they were right. I've learned so many fascinating things ranging from the anatomy of the brain to the intricate behaviors of people. Every unit provided a distinct set of information and intriguing scientific knowledge. The captivating curriculum combined with Ms. Halfen's teaching makes AP Psych an easy recommendation for any student.     My advice to anyone taking AP psych is to pace yourself through the course. There is a lot of content in AP Psych and very little time to go through it. So, don't wait till the end to get on top of your studies. Take good notes for each unit as you go through it in class and do your vocab. I wouldn't consider vocab optional at all. It is going to be your best resource for the AP exam. Also, take advantage of online resources like Fivable. They have great review materi...

How Good is Your Memory?

Image
I took the short-term memory test by psychologistworld.com. I got 12 out of 12 correct. I think the test is valid because it accurately measures how many things you can remember in your short-term memory at a time.  https://www.psychologistworld.com/memory/stm-test-result I also took the "How is your memory for faces" test. I got 10 out of 10 bits correct. I don't think this test is valid because there are only three options to choose from and the features are unrealistically different from each other.  http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/java/facemem.html Finally, I took the "How Good Is Your Problem-Solving?" test. I was in the range of 59-80, which is a "confident problem solver." I don't think this is a valid test because the questions only take your problem-solving behaviors into account, which doesn't necessarily translate to your problem-solving skills in real life. https://www.mindtools.com/aoubxrt/how-good-is-your-problem-solving

Social Psych...It's real life

Marve Theme  Compliance: Compliance is changing one's behavior as a result of other people directly or asking for the change. In Spider-Man No Way Home, Dr. Strange agrees to help Peter by erasing people's memory of him being Spider-Man as it was affecting his friends' lives. Obedience is a form of compliance that occurs when people follow direct commands, usually from someone in a position of authority. In Thor Ragnorak, Grandmaster ordered Loki and Valkyrie to bring back Thor and Hulk and they followed the order. Social Facilitation is the phenomenon where the presence of other people can enhance an individual's performance on a task. In Shang Chi, Shang was able to beat his opponents in training because he knew his dad was watching. Group Polarization occurs when a group of like-minded people reinforce each other's opinion and these opinions become more extreme as they're discussed. In Captain America Civil War, Captain America's group believed that the s...

How Intuition Affects Self-Control       Our decisions come in part from processes that are fast, impulsive, and automatic (System I), but also from other processes that are slower, deliberative, and cognitive (System II). Intuition is often impulsive, and many impulses are intuitive. Self-control, on the other hand, is not only about stopping yourself from falling into temptation, but also about inhibiting impulses and controlling your intuition. Your brain is constantly trying to automatize frequent behaviors and free you to do other things.       Experimental psychologists use this observation to "tax the brain" and manipulate subjects into being more intuitive and less capable of inhibiting impulsive behavior. If cognitive resources are taxed, deliberation and cognition are more difficult, and we naturally fall into a System I mode (a more intuitive, less controlled way of thinking) which does not need those resources that have been take...

Senses and Stuff

Image
A Scottish woman named Joy Milne found out that she was able to smell if someone had Parkinson's Disease when her husband was diagnosed with it and she could detect a distinct smell. She had hereditary hyperosmia, giving her hypersensitivity to smell. She worked with scientists in the UK to find out what was inducing the smell. With the research, they developed a skin-swab-based test that tests for Parkinson's disease. This could also lead to the development of tests for Alzheimer's disease, cancer, tuberculosis, etc.          I think our olfactory sense is a peculiar sense with great potential. The fact that someone is able to smell such chemical changes shows how impressive it is. I think it's really interesting to think about the potential that our senses are capable of and the weird ways in which they can be useful. BioHeroes

My birthday is September 20th, so my part of the brain is the temporal lobe (auditory processing) and my neurotransmitter is dopamine (pleasure, satisfaction and motivation). My hero is Dopa-Phonic. His ability is being able to hear people from very far away and giving very effective motivational pep talks.       The story of Dopa-Phonic begins when he was five years old. His dad is a charismatic motivational speaker who gives speeches all around the world. His mom has an incredible memory and can remember every detail of her life. Tom's (Dopa-Phonic) parents noticed that he had hyperthymia and a heightened hearing. He could hear sounds that no one else could, and from miles away. It tuned out to be a genetic mutation that affected his temporal lobe.     Growing up with his dad, he learned a lot about being empathetic and motivating others. He was able to increase dopamine levels in people. He listened to people's problems and was able to give them an...
